The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World

A must-have item for any journey or trip I’m about to undertake includes loads of reading material. You just never know when you’ll experience a delayed flight or a kink in your travel plans that cause you to suddenly find some extra time on your hands.

A few months ago I was sent a review copy of The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World. I’ll admit, I was reluctant to read the book, not because it didn’t look appealing, but because I was totally jealous that a group of women who blogged about their travels landed a book deal. I placed the book on my nightstand, hoping I could forget about it.

The book haunted me. Some nights I would have trouble falling asleep. I would turn over and see the title on the spine taunting me. I even put the book in a drawer, only to have the book glare at me one evening as I searched for my hand lotion. I finally gave in and opened to the first page.

The Lost Girls is a group travel memoir that is more than just a retelling of an around the world trip. It goes deeper into the travel experience and illustrates just how possible it is for young professionals to take an amazing journey to see the world. These three young women left the comfort of their Manhattan lifestyle to explore the world with no real agenda except to experience life. They entertain readers with their various exotic adventures, share a few tips on how to accomplish a year of travel, and give a glimpse into the ups and downs of three different personalities traveling together for an entire year.

I don’t know that this book is for everyone, but for me it was a bittersweet read, bringing to mind what I was doing at their age. I was already a mother of two and had made the choice of settling down and taking responsibility for a family. However, now as a Traveling Mama, I’ve totally had some amazing adventures of my own, just in shorter, easier to digest amounts of time.

If you’ve ever dreamed of what could’ve been or what could be in your travel future, The Lost Girls is a solid read for both armchair travelers and adventure lovers. By the time I finished reading The Lost Girls, my jealousy had left to be replaced with admiration for these three women who did what many of us can only dream of. As I set the book down after reading the final sentence, I thought about the differences in women all over the world and the choices we each make at various points in our lives.

For me – I wouldn’t change a thing and I’ll just bet The Lost Girls wouldn’t change a thing either.

The Lost Girls isn’t just a book found in stores, but also an ideal created by Jennifer Baggett, Holly C. Corbett, and Amanda Pressner. Their blog, Lost Girls World offers amazing stories and adventures by talented writers from around the world. A while back I was featured as the Lost Girl of the Week and it pretty much sums up my mindset after reading this amazing travel memoir by three amazing young women.
