A Perfect Weekend Getaway in Louisiana: St. Francisville
Some places never really leave you, no matter how far life carries you.
St. Francisville is one of those places for me.
If circumstances were different (my husband has to live near an East Coast company base) I would be back in Louisiana, and very likely back in St. Francisville. My daughter and grandkids live nearby now. I lived here for a season of my life. And some of my deepest memories are rooted just down the road at the dream house my parents’ built.
It’s a town tied to family, reflection, and comfort, which is exactly why it makes such a perfect weekend getaway in Louisiana.
Why St. Francisville Is Ideal for a Weekend Escape
Perched on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, St. Francisville offers something rare in Louisiana: rolling terrain, cooler breezes, and a sense of quiet elevation… both literal and emotional.
What makes it special:
- A walkable historic district with true small-town charm
- Moss-draped roads and scenic drives through West Feliciana Parish
- Deep history layered with natural beauty
- Thoughtful dining, cozy lodging, and welcoming locals
- A Hallmark-movie feel without feeling staged or artificial
It’s no accident that river cruises include St. Francisville as a stop. Travelers recognize when a place has soul.

Where to Stay in St. Francisville
Despite its small size, St. Francisville offers a variety of accommodations, from historic inns to practical stays.
Places I’ve Stayed
- Shade Tree Inn – Comfortable, convenient, and central
- Hotel Toussaint – A newer boutique option with charm and character
- A nearby Best Western – Practical and reliable when availability is tight
- A handful of home rentals (limited due to local ordinances)
Other Notable Options
- The Myrtles Plantation – Historic and atmospheric
- St. Francisville Inn – Romantic, refined, and a destination in itself
- The Lodge at the Bluffs – Peaceful, scenic, and ideal for unplugging
There are other charming places to stay as well. Part of the joy here is discovering what fits your travel style best.

What to Do: History, Nature & Slow Living
St. Francisville invites you to slow down, and rewards you when you do.

- Bird Man Coffee – A favorite for excellent coffee
- Elta Coffee – Located at The Myrtles’ gift shop, perfect for a relaxed start

- The Saint at St. Francisville Inn – Wonderful for breakfast, brunch, or evening cocktails (my favorite is the Cajun French Martini, and lunch or dinner here is outstanding, also )
- 1796 at The Myrtles – A beautiful brunch experience steeped in history
Lunch & Casual Dining
- Magnolia Cafe – Known locally as The Mag; I love the soup and sandwich deal

- El Mejor
You’ll also find additional pizza spots, American-Chinese options, and casual eateries. There’s truly more than can fit into one weekend. And, there is even a walk up Daiquiri shop. Shhh!
Local tip: Audubon Market is a gem for Louisiana-made products, local seafood, and a hot deli, perfect for picnic supplies or an easy night in.
Shopping & Local Finds
Shopping here is part of the experience. Not rushed, not overwhelming, and full of personality.
- Sage Hill – A favorite for gifts and stylish finds (including playful pieces like Queen of Sparkles tops)
- The Corbel – A standout home store sourcing antique European items and crafting furniture from reclaimed Louisiana cypress
- I purchased a swing bed here for our home in Maine, shipped north so a little piece of Louisiana could live with us year-round
- Barlow and Deyo – Unique clothing and accessories (His & Hers)
- Elements – A newer favorite with thoughtfully curated pieces
There are many more small shops worth exploring. Wandering without an agenda is part of the charm.
A Simple Weekend Itinerary

You’ll leave refreshed, not depleted.
Final Thoughts
St. Francisville isn’t loud or flashy, and that’s exactly why it stays with you. It’s a place for reconnecting: with family, with memory, and with yourself. Whether you come for history, nature, food, or simply stillness, it offers one of the most quietly beautiful weekend getaways in Louisiana.
And chances are, like me, you’ll find yourself coming back.
