Calabash Cove Review: Boutique Romance and Hillside Serenity in St. Lucia

Some resorts impress you with amenities. Others stay with you because of how they make you feel.

Calabash Cove Resort & Spa did both.

After spending a few days at larger all-inclusive resorts around Saint Lucia, my husband James and I arrived at Calabash Cove for a one-night stay that somehow felt both restorative and inspiring. Quiet. Romantic. Authentic. The kind of place where time slows down and the outside world fades into the sound of wind through tropical foliage.

And honestly? It was difficult to leave.

Getting to Calabash Cove

To reach Calabash Cove, we hired a private driver, Off the Beaten Path Taxi Service, owned by Owin Antoine, who came highly recommended by a friend familiar with the island.

Owin picked us up at Serenity at Coconut Bay and drove us across the island toward the northwestern coast of St. Lucia. The drive took close to two hours due to traffic, but it became part of the experience itself.

Along the route, we stopped at scenic overlooks to take in some of the island’s lush landscapes and coastal views. St. Lucia is mountainous, vibrant, and stunningly green, and driving through local towns gave us a better sense of place beyond the resort walls.

Calabash Cove itself sits tucked away down a winding hillside road off the main highway, immediately giving it a more secluded, hidden-away feel.

First Impressions: Boutique, Peaceful, and Personal

Upon arrival, we stepped into an open-air lobby overlooking the Caribbean and were greeted with welcome drinks while checking in.

The atmosphere immediately felt slower and more intimate than many larger resorts. No crowds. No rushed energy. Just a peaceful sense of arrival.

Since we were hungry after the drive, we grabbed a leisurely late lunch at the resort’s restaurant before heading to our room. We opted for the all-inclusive plan during our stay and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the wine selections available by the glass. Even outside the package, the pricing felt very reasonable for a luxury Caribbean resort.

Cottage 1: Our Private Hillside Oasis

We stayed in Cottage 1, located at the end of a row of hillside cottages, and for us, it was perfect.

One thing to know about Calabash Cove: the property is built into a mountainside. There are a lot of stairs throughout the resort, which may not suit every traveler. But that elevation is also what gives the property its spectacular views and private feel.

Our cottage featured:

  • A private plunge pool overlooking the water
  • Wraparound porch with loungers, hammock, Adirondack chair, and dining table
  • Open-air living area with wet bar
  • Separate air-conditioned bedroom
  • Four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting
  • Large jacuzzi tub for two
  • Outdoor shower with views of the night sky

The entire experience reminded us so much of our honeymoon in Bali, where we stayed in an open-air mahogany beach cottage. That same feeling of rustic luxury and tropical intimacy came rushing back the moment we stepped inside.

And from that moment on, we were completely in love with the place.

The Beach: Quiet, Secluded, and Exactly What We Needed

After relaxing in the plunge pool for a while, I wandered down to the beach alone to explore and get a better sense of the property.

I happened to time it perfectly.

The beach was nearly empty except for a couple of other guests. Calm water. Soft breeze. Plenty of shade. I spent time floating in the water, relaxing in a hammock, and even collecting a few shells for my personal collection.

It felt peaceful in a way that’s becoming harder to find in modern travel.

When I eventually returned to the cottage, James and I settled into our plunge pool to watch sunset together.

And wow.

Watching the sun disappear into the horizon while floating in our own little hillside oasis was one of those travel moments you wish you could bottle forever.

Dining at Windsong Restaurant

Dinner that evening at Windsong Restaurant was another standout experience.

We dined under the stars while a solo musician moved effortlessly between piano, flute, and saxophone throughout the evening.

My meal included:

  • Seafood ravioli with fennel in herb cream sauce and tomato chutney
  • Cocoa-rubbed seared yellowfin tuna over wild rice and bok choy
  • Chocolate caramel cheesecake that somehow felt impossibly light

James ordered the Penne Diavolo with tiger shrimp in spicy Creole sauce.

Executive Chef Burt also offers rotating nightly specials in addition to the regular menu, giving repeat guests something new to experience.

Every dish felt thoughtful, balanced, and beautifully presented without trying too hard.

Stargazing, Southern Crosses, and Slow Mornings

That evening, while walking back to our cottage, we noticed something special overhead: the constellation Crux, also known as the Southern Cross.

Later, we slipped back into the plunge pool beneath the stars before eventually falling asleep in the cool comfort of the netted four-poster bed.

The next morning may have been my favorite moment of the entire stay.

I woke early, stepped out onto the porch to write, and realized room service hadn’t opened yet when I called for coffee. A kind security guard appeared shortly afterward carrying a French press pot of Blue Mountain coffee.

That small gesture somehow captured the entire spirit of the resort for me.

Unhurried. Thoughtful. Genuine.

Breakfast With a View

Once room service opened, James and I ordered breakfast to enjoy on our porch overlooking the water.

I chose the Calabash Eggs Benedict with salted cod, smoked salmon, poached eggs, and lemon hollandaise…and it was excellent.

Of course, we squeezed in one more dip in the plunge pool and another walk down to the beach before checkout.

The manager graciously extended our departure time since the cottage wasn’t booked that evening, allowing us to savor the experience just a little longer.

And honestly, we needed it.

Who Calabash Cove Is Best For

Calabash Cove Resort & Spa is ideal for:

  • Couples seeking romance and privacy
  • Travelers who prefer boutique resorts over mega-properties
  • Writers, creatives, and anyone craving quiet inspiration
  • Honeymooners looking for a more authentic Caribbean feel

This isn’t a high-energy resort with endless activities.

It’s intentional. Relaxed. Atmospheric.

And for the right traveler, that’s exactly the point.

Final Thoughts: Is Calabash Cove Worth It?

Absolutely.

While we only stayed one night, it left a lasting impression on both of us. In fact, I found myself already imagining what it would feel like to spend an entire week there, writing each morning on the porch, floating in the plunge pool at sunset, and settling into the slower rhythm of the island.

Calabash Cove doesn’t try to be flashy.

Instead, it offers something far more memorable: peace.
