I must have heard it about a thousand times this past weekend: “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” In fact, Las Vegas has been making a concerted effort lo, these many years to market itself as a very, well, adult destination.

Don’t believe the hype. While, yes, there are lots of grown-up, all-night, scantily-clad activities in Sin City, there’s also tons to do if you have tweens along for the ride – so much, in fact, that my two girls fought me like cats and dogs when I told them it was time to head to the airport and fly home.

Need ideas? Try these:

Hotels

Live it up at the lake. Lake Las Vegas is home to a kid-friendly Loews property, the place to kick back and get away from it all. While the lake is in a different part of town than the Las Vegas Strip (where a lot of that scantily-clad stuff happens), rental cars are cheap (we got a mid-sized sedan on Expedia for $17/day), and the hotel provides a free shuttle in to the casinos. What’s nice: You’ll feel like you’re at a Caribbean resort, even while you have easy access to all the city has to offer! The Loews has a giant pool complete with water slide, huge rooms with balconies over the lake, and fun water activities like kayaking and paddle boarding.

The outdoor lobby at the Loews Lake Las Vegas

Hit the beach. A fake beach, that is, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, where the wave pool and lazy river will keep kids happy while mom and dad enjoy adult beverages on the sand. We went whole hog and booked a Skyview Suite on the 62nd floor – the kids loved watching the planes and helicopters take off from the airport across the street, and my husband and I appreciated the mountain view. Best of all? The suite had 1 ½ baths and a full living room with two twin-sized couches, so we had separate sleeping quarters and room to spread out.

Check out what’s new. The brand new Cosmopolitan has the cushiest pool lounge chairs and the most modern décor on the Strip. While we didn’t get a chance to stay overnight, it’s on our list for next time.

Dining

Bust your seams at a Las Vegas buffet. The classic Vegas dining experience is perfect for families with kids; there’s something for everyone, and kids don’t have to wait for the food to arrive. Our favorite? The Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan, a one-of-a-kind food hall that delivers a multi-ethnic mix of top-quality, familiar staples arranged in an imaginative small-plates format. My kids liked the asiago stuffed gnocchi so much that they went back for sixths; the prime rib carving station and macaroni and cheese made me drool.

The beef carving station at the Wicked Spoon

Take in the view. At Marssa in the Loews Lake Las Vegas, you can sit by the window and look out at the lake while you and the kids feast on gourmet steaks, sushi, and fish. While this gem of a fine dining spot has an Asian theme (complete with sushi bar and bento boxes for kids), the menu’s got something for everyone. Don’t miss the chocolate lava cakes and the banana tempura!

Fill up on pasta. Lupo, a Wolfgang Puck restaurant in the Mandalay Bay, offers small pizzas and kid-friendly pasta dishes, as well as sea bass carved tableside.

Hit the neighborhood pizza joint. Ask for directions – it’s worth the hunt! Evoking the feel of an authentic New York pizza joint, Pizzeria at the Cosmopolitan is a hidden gem serving whole pies and pizzas by the slice, an ideal stop-in-anytime kind of place. A long, vaulted entry corridor is lined with a curated collection of vintage Italian record album covers, leading to the pizza counter and kitchen with high counters and mismatched antique bar stools. The kids can play pinball while you wait for your pie.

The pizza chefs at Pizzeria in the Cosmopolitan throw some dough around.

Activities

Laugh for a full hour. Mac King, who has been headlining at Harrah’s Las Vegas for more than 11 years and was recently named Best Strip headliner by the Las Vegas Weekly, presents a super family-friendly show filled with laughter and magic that keeps the audience asking “How did he do that?” The show is G-rated and in the afternoon, so it’s perfect for kids (mine are still giggling).

The hilarious Mac King

Ride an ocean liner. Or pretend you did, anyway, at the Titanic exhibit in the Luxor. When you “board,” you’ll get a boarding pass for a real Titantic passenger. Strolling through, you’ll learn the story of the Titanic’s doomed voyage and see artifacts recovered from the ocean floor. At the end, you’ll find out whether “your” passenger survived the iceberg collision (Abby’s and mine lived to tell the tale, but Steve’s perished in the icy waters).

Reflect on the circle of life. At the Lion King show at the Mandalay Bay, your kids will be mesmerized by the joy pouring out from the stage (I’m not kidding – Abby smiled from ear to ear for two hours plus). The Las Vegas production is virtually identical to the other companies seen around the globe and is staged with all of the same spectacular music, sets, and costumes that have made it a worldwide phenomenon. Try for an aisle seat, all the better to see the performers dance down to the stage through the audience.

The Lion King wows Las Vegas audiences.

Get ”Tanked.” Yep, the popular Animal Planet show takes place right here in Vegas. Acrylic Tank Manufacturing, the company featured on the program, is open to the public and easy to access if you have a rental car. Even better, Brett and Wayde, the show’s hosts, really work on site and are great with kids.

With Brett and the family at "Tanked"

Take the plunge. Lots of Vegas options for this one: Ride the roller coaster at New York, New York; slide through the shark tank at the Golden Nugget; or bungee jump off the top of the Stratosphere. Or, if you’re interested in a different kind of plunge, do what Steve and I did and renew your vows with “Elvis.”

I was in love with Venice before we even met. I was obsessed, watching Venice virtually through webcams and reading every story and blog about her. And then my opportunity to meet Venice in real life became a reality. We were able to have a brief affair, with only 24 hours together.

Venice has a reputation for being expensive. However, once you get to know her, you’ll never want to leave her embrace. Our time together was limited, but somehow we managed a bit of quality bonding. If you should ever get the chance to visit Venice, there are a few things you must do while you’re there, especially if it’s your first time.

I was there for only one day before our cruise on the Carnival Magic, and brought my parents along. I had this well-meaning list of free and cheap things to do, but once we arrived in St. Marc’s Square, all the planning went out the window. Heck, we only had one day to squeeze in all we could and who knew if any of us would get the chance for a return visit?

We were frugal in the beginning, opting for the free things. As the day progressed, we spent a few Euros here and there. Then my mother and I left my dad sitting in the square while we went exploring for a bit. By the time we returned to my dad’s sitting area, his mood regarding a gondola ride had gone from the I’m not spending that much money on a ride in a canoe to Your mom wants to ride in a gondola and I’m probably never coming back, so I’ll spend whatever it takes to make her happy.

Our day was coming to an end and it was also a major holiday in Italy. My dad paid well over 100 Euros for a quick, 20 minute gondola ride that ended at Harry’s Bar. I’m glad my dad splurged for the gondola ride, because I wouldn’t pay that much, but it was pretty darn cool experience.

Free and Cheap Things to Do in Venice

Piazza San Marco – This is the center of activity in Venice, and is usually full of tourists. Napoleon called this “the drawing room of Europe.” I loved watching the pigeons. And there are tons of pigeons in St. Mark’s Square. If you are more of a people watcher, then grab a drink somewhere and have a seat.

Basilica di San Marco – St. Mark’s Basilica is free to tour, however there are long lines to get in. Once inside, there are smaller museums tucked in corners that do require a small fee. I went through them all, and if you are short on time and Euros, but still want to see a museum, then you’ll want to visit the Museo San Marco, which you’ll enter through the steep stairway to the right of the Basilica doors. At the time of my visit, the charge was around 4 Euros. This upper level area offers one of the best views of St. Mark’s Square. Be sure to dress properly (modest, knees covered). Backpacks and large bags are not allowed inside.

Riding the Venice Vaporetto Route No. 1 – This water bus option is an affordable way to experience the Grand Canal. Fare is around 6.50 Euros one way and has various stops along the Grand Canal. You can purchase tickets at the main ticket counters or machines at major stops. I enjoyed watching the locals get on and off the water bus, from a family heading to a wedding, to little old ladies staring back at me.

Walk Around – Many websites suggest getting lost in Venice, which is a fun and interesting way to see the city. However, if you are on a time limit, don’t get TOO lost! Mom and I walked a few of the streets while enjoying a gelato. I loved looking in the windows of the shops. Venice was everything I imagined it to be.

Celebrate with Prosecco – Prosecco is Italy’s sparkling wine, and while I just HAD to have a Bellini at Harry’s Bar, at 15 Euros it definitely wasn’t cheap. Especially since I bought a round for my parents after that expensive gondola ride. An affordable and more authentic way to celebrate being in Venice is with a Spritz (pronounced spriss), which is a Prosecco based drink that won’t deplete all your spending money.

Each year for our anniversary, my husband and I have intentions of taking a romantic getaway to a gulf coast beach. Life always seems to get in the way, but this year, the moon and stars aligned providing us the opportunity to run away for a long weekend of relaxation and romance. We were searching for a place that was on the beach, but also had a spa and room service. We found what we were looking for in the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa, located on South Walton‘s Sandestin Beach.

It’s sometimes hard for parents to find time as a couple for a romantic getaway, but I’ve always stressed the importance of remembering that you were a couple before you became parents, and later on down the road it will be just the two of you again. It’s always nice to make that effort to reconnect, no matter how big or how small your budget might be. During the fall, there are plenty of travel deals to be found for a romantic getaway, including a beachfront destination.

We planned on two nights at the beach, with no agenda and no responsibilities. We packed our essentials: swimsuits, flipflops, a big hat, sunscreen, Community Coffee, and Abita Beer. All our gear was packed in our new truck and we headed east. We listened to XM Radio during the drive, singing and laughing at songs from the 70′s and 80′s. We finally settled on Margaritaville Radio to get us in the beach mood.

The Property

The Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa is a full service hotel operated independently inside Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Sandestin Beach is one of the 15 beach neighborhoods of South Walton and offers a range of activities and attractions for all ages and interests. You get the Hilton Hotels and Resorts service with the advantage of being inside an amazing destination such as Sandestin.

The resort offers a number of restaurants onsite, including Seagar’s for fine dining, Hadashi Sushi Bar, casual dining at Sandcastles, Barefoot’s Beach Bar and Grill, Picnix Market, and The Coffee Shop. There’s also a conference area onsite, along with Serenity by the sea spa, resort golf courses, indoor and outdoor pools, and even a shuttle for guests to explore the 2400 acre Sandestin Resort. Parking is available at $10 for self park and $20 for valet parking.

There are two towers, with one offering family friendly rooms and the other offering a quieter side. We stayed in the quieter tower located in the same building as the spa, in room 348.

Our Room

We stayed in an Executive Beachfront King room, which offered a wrap around balcony and views of the beach from all windows. The room was much more spacious than I anticipated, with a full seating area, dining area, comfortable king bed, and even an area with microwave and fridge. The bathroom area had two sinks, one inside the full bathroom and the other in a dressing area. I was excited to see the Peter Thomas Roth bath amenities in the room. The room was decorated in soothing beach tones. I just loved sitting on that balcony watching the clear aqua water kiss the white sandy shore.

Dining

Barefoot’s Bar and Grill is an poolside venue open until early evening that offers a view of the Gulf of Mexico. The lunch menu offers typical beach fare, including nachos, burgers, and fish tacos, along with a signature cocktail menu. We enjoyed a late lunch our first afternoon, which consisted of Baja Tacos, a cheeseburger, and some adult beverages. The food was good and the service was fast, even during a busy time of the day. The next day as we lounged by the pool, we sampled the Ultimate Nachos and had a few more frozen libations poolside.

Room service is something I don’t always indulge in, but since we were into the ultimate relaxing romantic getaway, we ordered a late night meal from room service. Our ordered was delivered in a timely manner and the food (crab cake sliders and a hot dog) was actually pretty darn good. The price wasn’t outrageous for room service, either.

The Spa

The Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa offers an onside spa facility Serenity by the sea. It is located in the lower tower on the ground level and is a luxurious retreat. The spa offers separate men and women’s facilities with steam room, sauna, relaxation room, full dressing area, lockers, and whirlpool. I enjoyed a Spa Pedicure treatment which included use of the relaxation lounge and spa amenities, making for a very relaxing Saturday. This spa is popular with guests, so be sure to book your treatment in advanced. If you’d like to spend the day relaxing at the spa without a treatment, there is a $20 day use fee for hotel guests.

The Pool

There are two outdoor pools and one indoor pool at the Hilton Sandestin Beach. We checked out pool towels from the towel hut and claimed two pool loungers at the smaller outdoor pool. There are cabanas available for $139 per day, which includes luxury lounge chairs, shade, table and chairs, and a luxury ice chest. I was satisfied with my poolside retreat with its view of the Gulf.

The Beach

The reason for the romantic getaway was to relax at the beach. It was wonderful and peaceful to inhale the fresh coastal air, listen to the waves lap the shore, and watch dolphins swim in the clear water. Each morning I watched the sunrise as I sipped my morning coffee, and each evening we watched the sun set. One evening we set out, leaving footprints in the sand as we found our perfect little quiet area of the beach. The sun set as we sipped Champagne while the stars began to peek through the dusky sky.

Overall our romantic getaway at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa was all that I could imagine. We weren’t looking for adventure, even though those activities could be found onsite. We just wanted a quiet weekend away from the everyday craziness that is normal life. We did step off property one evening to explore the other beach neighborhoods of South Walton, but for me, I only wanted to sit on that balcony, sipping a glass of wine, and finding a few days of peacefulness.

To book your own romantic getaway at the Hilton Sandestin Beach, visit www.SandestinBeachHilton.com. There are a variety of packages available and if you are a Hilton HHonors member, you can use points for nights at this beachfront property. I recommend this property if you are looking to stay a few nights at the beach, can book at a good rate, or use your Hilton HHonors points for nights.

Disclosure: Our room was at a reduced rate and the spa treatment was compliments of the property. We planned on staying at this property regardless of any discounts offered.

South Walton, located along Florida’s Northwest coast, is an area of 15 neighborhoods located along the Gulf Coast. These neighborhoods offer some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen, and I’ve ben to a few. It may be that this area is close to my heart, being the setting for many family vacations when I was a kid, and I’ve been back as an adult, but whatever the reason, it’s an area of the US not to be missed.

Last summer we took a family beach vacation to Sandestin, one of the neighborhoods of South Walton. It was a few months after the oil spill, but the beaches were miles of sugary white sand, squeaking as our bare feet walked to our beach chairs.

A few years before, I spent some time at Watercolor while working on a bridal story for a magazine where I was on staff. I explored a few of the other neighborhoods, including Seaside and Watersound. I thought the beach in those areas were absolutely perfect.

What I adore most about this beach area is the pristine sand, where you can walk barefoot and not have your feet get cut up. Granted, there may be a small shell here or there, but unlike other coastlines that have small pebbles and rocky areas, here you’ll find nothing but sand under your toes from the dunes all the way into the water.

South Walton wants you to share some of your memories of visiting their area, and give Facebook fans who share photos a chance to enter an amazing contest. From August 15 through October 15, this upscale Northwest Florida destination will celebrate the tradition of the family beach photo with its “Find Your Perfect Beach” Contest, giving visitors the chance to win prizes valued at more than $90,000.

The contest is easy to enter and provides numerous opportunities to win. Facebook fans can simply “like” South Walton at www.Facebook.com/VisitSouthWalton and share photo memories. South Walton visitors who submit photos of their vacations and share why South Walton is their perfect beach destination will have a chance to win a seven-day vacation to the beach neighborhood of their choice, as well as a number of additional prizes.

For those visiting the destination during the contest dates, there is an added bonus: Beach Appreciation Teams will roam the 15 beach neighborhoods each day choosing five families at random to win a free beach portrait sitting from Vacation Portraits Photography.

While the contest is designed to reward the loyal visitors who return to South Walton year after year, those who have yet to discover the destination’s pristine white-sand beaches and turquoise waters can still win valuable prizes by visiting South Walton’s Facebook page and choosing their perfect beach.

Contest Details

The world is becoming more aware of people with disabilities. You can hail an accessible cab in London, take an elevator up to the Eiffel Tower, and sleep in a wheelchair-accessible villa in Spain.

Traveling in a wheelchair to a foreign country is challenging, but not impossible.

“Once you leave home, things will be different,” says travel agent Ann Litt, who owns Undiscovered Britain and arranges customized accessible trips. “Be a little flexible and roll with the punches, and it’s absolutely worth going abroad.”

Research the Destination

Unless you are on a cruise or an organized tour with a guide, don’t try to see multiple countries on one trip advises Christine Arnold, a certified travel counselor with Classic Travel, who specializes in disabled travel. Coordinating multiple hotels and transportation is complex.

Arnold, who has multiple sclerosis and occasionally uses a scooter or cane, has visited more than 40 countries.

She says, “African safaris are quite popular for people who use wheelchairs. Guests are seated while they view the animals from an air-conditioned 4×4. The safari lodges are spectacular. They are small and the staff caters to your every need.”

Cruises are also a nice option, says Arnold. “You only unpack once, disability access is good, and there is a doctor on board.” Not every cruise ship is a headed to the beach.

Arnold especially enjoys European river cruises, and recently took one from Rome to Barcelona. If time permits, you can opt to stay a few days longer at the final stop and explore the city.

Do Your Homework

An international journey begins long before you leave home. Arnold tells clients to start planning at least six months prior to the departure date.

Before you pack a suitcase, research the destination you wish to visit. A wealth of information is available on the Internet, so start with the Tourism Offices Worldwide Directory where you can find valuable links from Algeria to Zimbabwe.

Many tourism organizations post accessibility information. You may need to try several search terms such as “accessibility,” “accessible,” “disabled,” “handicapped,” “special needs,” and “wheelchair” to locate this information. If none of these terms retrieve information, try “senior” and “elderly.”

For example, searching the Visit Britain Web site returned more than 2,000 links to “disability” information. One such link explained that many accessible public toilets in Britain are locked to prevent vandalism.

Before visiting Britain, you can purchase a key that unlocks any of the 7,000 accessible toilets that are registered with the National Key Scheme.

Hire a Travel Agent

Orchestrating travel arrangements—especially when you use a wheelchair—takes tremendous organizational skills and attention to the details.

Try to work with an agent who has experience or specializes in accessible travel. Contact the agent and discuss your specific physical needs. This is also the time to talk about the travel agent’s fees and your budget.

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) is the largest association of travel agents in the world. On the ASTA Web site you can search for an agent who lists “Disabled/Accessibility” as a specialty. An impressive list of companies that specialize in accessible travel can be found on the DisabledTravelers.com Web site.

A travel agent can book the flight arrangements, transportation, and accommodations. An agent should be able to advise you regarding the accessibility of attractions and some will even help you rent medical equipment.

Howard J. McCoy, III is the CEO of Accessible Journeys, which has been booking accessible trips for 25 years.

McCoy says a destination’s accessibility depends upon each individual’s unique needs. Many people do not know what they are capable of doing and what is available. He has rented a vehicle with hand controls for a client who was vacationing in England and arranged for porters to carry another client to the top of Machu Picchu.

Buy Travel Insurance

Buy travel insurance at the time that you book your trip. “Most travel insurance companies cover a pre-existing condition, but only if you purchase the insurance within 21 days of putting down the first payment on the trip,” says Arnold.

She warns travelers to buy the insurance from a third party and not the company that is arranging your trip—in the event they go out of business.

A list of travel insurance companies can be found on the U.S. State Department’s Web site. Most medical insurance, including Medicare, does not provide coverage when you are traveling outside the United States.

Pack Like a Pro

Carefully pack only what is absolutely necessary and leave empty room for souvenirs.

Check the airline’s Web site for guidance on luggage size and weight. Medical equipment, such as a wheelchair, does not count as baggage. Bring your physician’s phone number and the after hours phone number. Bring all medication in original containers. Pack these in a carry on bag along with other not-easily-replaced items such as passport, glasses, contacts, and itinerary. Exchange a few hundred dollars into the currency of the country you are visiting before you leave home.

Bon Voyage

Although the idea of traveling to another country when you use a wheelchair may be daunting, it is possible. Thorough planning and research of your destination can help overcome obstacles.

“Travel is very personal and if you nee extra assistance ask,” says Arnold. “I’ve found people want to be helpful. It’s your vacation—don’t be shy.”

The Help, a New York Times bestselling novel, is being released in theaters on August 10, 2011. This fictional story is based on the real culture of household workers in 1960′s Jackson, Mississippi and was filmed throughout the state.

Author, Kathryn Stockett, was insistent that if her book was to be bought to the big screen, then it had to be filmed in Mississippi. It only makes sense, seeing that the book was set in this southern state. Director Tate Taylor, Stockett’s friend, and screenplay writer, stayed close to the storyline of the novel. The movie was filmed in three Mississippi locations: Clarksdale, Greenwood, and Jackson.

I recently traveled to Jackson, Mississippi on Amtrak’s City of New Orleans and from the moment I stepped off the train, I had almost stepped back in time. The historic train station housed the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation and the entire building had been restored to it’s former glory. While the novel is based predominantly in Jackson, the residential film site was actually Greenwood, which still offers the architecture of the era. There were some scenes of The Help movie filmed in downtown Jackson, Mississippi.

The Cuisine:

If you are a big fan of book, then you’ll be a big fan of the movie, but you don’t necessarily have to read the book before heading to the theater. Fans of the book and movie can take a trip to Jackson and enjoy southern comfort food, such as golden fried chicken and fresh country vegetables, all washed down with a glass of sweet ice tea. There are a number of restaurants (including the amazing Parlor Market), but the most notable for fans of The Help is The Mayflower Cafe, which appears in the movie a few times. At night, the neon light beckons visitors to step into a time warp. You’ll sit down and expect to see Skeeter enjoying a malt or to hear that mean old Hilly Holbrook walk through the door, entourage following, as they gossip about those they think are beneath them.

And I’ll bet you can find a slice of chocolate pie or two for dessert. If you are looking for other delicious Southern Cuisine restaurants in Jackson, a great online resource is Eat Jackson, complete with reviews, menus, and directions.

Places to Stay:

The Historic Fairview Inn was not only a film site for The Help, but also where many of the stars stayed during filming. It is also mentioned in the novel on page 148. The Fairview Inn is offering The Help Package, giving fans of the book and movie their own Southern Mississippi experience. The package includes lodging and nostalgia such as old fashioned bottle Coca Cola (with peanuts, drop a few in your coke for a true Southern delicacy), mint juleps on arrival, authentic southern dinner for 2 at Sophia’s Restaurant, playing cards, and a book on how to play Bridge. Rates start at $349 per night.

If you aren’t up for staying at The Fairview Inn, in downtown Jackson you can spend a night or two at the Jackson Mississippi Hilton Garden Inn, just across the street from the train station and one block from The Mayflower restaurant. The Hilton Garden Inn is an historic property built in 1923. It was once called the King Edward Hotel and is very chic and elegant. I stayed overnight during my visit to Jackson, MS and have to recommend breakfast at the hotel restaurant – the grits were delicious.

Driving Tour of Belhaven Neighborhood:

The City of Jackson, Mississippi put together a driving tour for fans of The Help, complete with quotes from the book and the landmarks mentioned. You can check out details of the full tour, along with a map download. Check out The Help in Belhaven Neighborhood Tour.

Synopsis (from Dreamworks)

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, The Help stars Emma Stone (Easy A) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (Doubt) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed —even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

The gray clapboard bed and breakfast resembles the seaside homes of upstate Maine.

The 36-room inn is on a one-mile stretch of sugar white sand beside the emerald waters of the Gulf Coast. An adults only property, every guest room receives a bottle of wine and flowers upon arrival.

On the Tuesday afternoon we arrive, the sun is shining on the green blue water as storm clouds began to gather. Our first floor Executive Suite is a large room with a king-size four-poster bed, two leather chairs and a small bar-height table with chairs. Amenities include: a microwave, mini fridge, coffee setup, jetted bathtub with shower, television with DVD player (free movies can be borrowed from the front desk), and free Internet.

Two glass doors open onto a covered wood balcony with chairs and a side table. Jim pours the wine, I unpack our books and we both take in big gulps of ocean air–this is relaxing. I could sit out here all day with the sound of the waves splashing onto the beach.

We’ve vacationed in Northwest Florida for years, but only recently discovered the Henderson Park Inn. This Gulf Coast gem is the perfect escape for a couple. The Inn prides itself on service. Breakfast and lunch are included in the pricing.

Dining

Breakfast is a huge spread. I choose oatmeal with an apple topping–it’s like apple pie without the guilt. Jim’s made-to-order omelet with tomatoes, cheese and bacon is delicious. We chat with a couple from Bloomington, Indiana who are thrilled with the Inn, love the beach and especially like that you have to be 25 or older to even make a reservation. Jim and I sip on a second cup of coffee and read the complimentary USA Today as more guests assemble for the morning meal.

Each evening, guests place their orders for the following day’s lunch. The selection is a range of sandwiches and salads from classics like ham and Swiss to Mediterranean Veggie. Fresh lemonade and gourmet cookies magically appear from noon to 2. Boxed lunches are a wonderfully flexible idea. You can eat on the beach, the dining room or your private balcony.

From 4 pm to 5 pm, guests gather on the Inn’s outdoor deck for the complimentary Happy Hour. Under the Tiki Bar, beer and wine flow as strangers introduce themselves. Many people choose to sit for the next few hours enjoying the front row seat to a spectacular sunset.

Another great seat is at the Beachwalk Cafe which offers indoor and outdoor dining. Only open for dinner, reservations are recommended. Make it early–if you want to see the view. We dined after dark, but were treated to an amazing lightening display.

The restaurant’s decor is understated with a very attentive wait staff. We ordered a glass of wine and the crab meat spring rolls–a light, airy appetizer with a soy ginger dipping sauce. For an entree, I had a Southern Classic–shrimp and grits. Jim ate every bite of his ribeye cap with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The tart key lime pie with a cheese cake texture is superb.

Diversions

The main attraction is the beach where the Inn has a row of umbrellas and chairs reserved for guests. Beach towels are stored in the lobby. Explore the area on one of the complimentary bicycles and take a ride to the nearby park or even 30-A with it’s funky art galleries and unique shops. Keeping cool is easy–community refrigerators are stocked with bottled waters, sodas and ice-cold candy bars.

Currently, the Inn is providing one complimentary ticket per stay to the Sea Blaster Boat Cruise. The most romantic choice is a sunset cruise.

Details

The Henderson Park Inn is a cozy retreat. I highly recommend it for couples celebrating an anniversary, rekindling the romance, or those in need of a secluded and relaxing escape. Thanks to the Inn for hosting our recent visit. Rates range from $139 to $609 per night. Call 1.888. 836.1105 for reservations and information.

One of the biggest tips I can give anyone about visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter inside Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventures is to stay at an on-site hotel. Why? Because you’ll get early entry into The Wizarding World, an hour before the park opens. My family tested this out during one of the busiest times of the year – Spring Break Week.

We waited late to book a room onsite, and the only hotel left with rooms was the most expensive, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. We booked a one night stay, along with 4 two park passes, which ran around $1000 total for room and tickets. This is alot of money, and for this price, I expected a good bit from Loews Portofino Bay Hotel.

Check In

We were on a family road trip and parked in the adjacent parking garage ($15 self park charge). There were carts available at the elevator for those bringing in large amounts of luggage. We arrived upstairs to the check in area and didn’t have to wait very long to check in. We were directed to our rooms and I stopped in the lobby area to pick up our Universal Orlando tickets which we purchased online. And we walked. And we walked. And we walked. Then we took the elevator to our floor. Then we walked. And walked. And walked. And we stopped to take a break. And then we walked even more before we finally made it to our Deluxe Room.

The Room

We booked a deluxe room, which was our only option at such a popular time of year. The room was spacious with two double beds, sitting area, and very large bathroom. The beds had 300-thread-count sheets. I was disappointed in the coffee pot, which was a Keurig, preventing me from enjoying my own Community Coffee (sigh). The bathroom had a soaking tub and separate shower. There were two sinks, which worked out well for our family of four. The bathroom fixtures were worn, with the caulking around the shower door hanging down onto the floor. There were bathrobes in the closet for our use and evening turndown service.

The Pool

Once we checked in, we went in search of the swimming pool and something to eat since we had been on the road all day. The swimming pool is zero entry with a sandy beach area. There are waterslides and lounge chairs, but the pool needs some updating. We opted to stay out of the pool and decided to have a light dinner at the poolside bar and grill.

Dining

There are a variety of dining options onsite at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, but we only experienced Splendido Pizzeria, the poolside bar and grill. Our family ordered one pizza, a burger plus fries, hot wings, 2 soft drinks, a beer, and a specialty cocktail. It was edible, but not the best I’d ever eaten. Then we got our bill – over $100! We had no idea before we ordered that not only was 18% gratuity included automatically for oue family of 4, but also an additional 18% resort fee. After that bill, we decided to skip breakfast at the resort the next morning.

Amenities

This Italian inspired resort is huge and spread out. There are actually other pools onsite, Mandara Spa, and little shops located around the bay area. After our expensive light dinner, we checked out the arcade for some family fun. We woke up super-early the next morning to take advantage of the early entry hours to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which began at 7am. We were checked out and had the truck loaded by 6:15 and went to hop onboard the complimentary onsite water taxi. The line was already extremely long for the water taxis and we would have to wait at least three cycles to catch one, so we opted to take the 20 minute walk to Universal’s Island’s of Adventure. Once we were directed to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, we went directly to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, which already had an hour wait by 7:15am. Once we experienced The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, then entire family enjoyed the rest of the day riding rides and checking out the rest of Universal Orlando, which had hardly any lines since all the crowds were at WWoHP.

Pros

Early entry to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (priceless)

Express Pass ($87 per person value/not valid at Wizarding World)

Priority seating at select Universal Orlando restaurants

Complimentary water taxi or shuttle to park (during regular operating hours)

Cons

Price (unless you can find a deal)

Hidden charges on dining (18% resort fee added)

Property is spread out, which could be a pro, but for those with mobility options it may present a problem.

Overall, I do recommend this place if you have a Harry Potter fan in the family and want to get the most out of your time at Universal Orlando’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It was a major splurge for my family, who usually travels on some sort of a budget. However, I had been saving up for over a year just to be able to take my teen son for this experience. For me, it was priceless to be able to provide this for my son, who rarely asks for anything.
